Description

    1828 Capped Bust Half, MS64
    Overton-118a, R.4
    Condition Census for the Variety

1828 50C Square Base 2, Small 8, Large Letters MS64 NGC. O-118a, R.4. This is a scarce R.4 die pairing, with all the diagnostics present for the late state of the reverse. Multiple die cracks encircle the denomination and legend. Despite the late die state, the strike is full on the eagle, talons, and arrows. The scroll is bold and complete. The obverse is similarly bold, with the stars, clasp, Liberty's hair, cap, and dentils all sharp. Attractive, gunmetal gray toning displays undertones of rose, blue, and green with silver luster radiant beneath the toning. The surfaces appear smooth, hard, and virtually without abrasions.

Overton-118a is well-known as the large letters variety with the legend running together, particularly between UNITED and STATES where the words are crowded. This example ranks high in Condition Census for the variety, where the finest-known is an MS65 example. This MS64 half is likely the second finest of the variety. (NGC ID# 24FR, PCGS# 6151)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
