Description

1828 O-122 Bust Half, MS65
Tied for Finest of the Variety

1828 50C Square Base 2, Small 8s, Large Letters, O-122, R.3, MS65 NGC. Struck from an early state of the dies, without the obvious diagnostic rim break outside of stars 5 and 6, but with slight weakness in the dentilation there, and the beginnings of twin radial cracks from the dentils to the closest points of the stars. This variety is easy to confuse with O-123 since they share the same obverse. The M well below the E in AMERICA on the reverse confirms O-122.

This lovely Gem example displays softly lustrous lilac and rose-gold patina over mark-free fields and devices. Fully struck, Liberty's curls, cap, drapery folds, and clasp show sharp details. The eagle and scroll are bold. This coin is tied for the finest certified of this variety compared to those listed in Steve Herrman's Spring 2014 Census and according to Donald Parsley's 2013 reference (4/14).
