    1829 Small Letters O-112 Half, MS65+
    Top-Notch Surface Preservation

1829 50C Small Letters, O-112, R.1, MS65+ PCGS. The obverse of this available variety is most readily distinguished, in the early die stages as here, by a patch of five or so diagonal die lines between the 9 in the date and star 13. Star 7 points to the upper half of a dentil and the top of a curl. The reverse shows a large 50 C with the 0 smaller than the 5 or C and line 6 in the shield solid. The I in PLURIBUS is a touch left of the center of T2. This MS65+ coin boasts top-notch eye appeal, displaying excellent luster throughout both sides. Rose-gray and blue-tinged rim patina on the obverse cedes on the reverse to ivory-gray, amber-gold, russet, and more blue. A few faint ticks on Liberty's chin and the denomination are all insignificant but among the only noticeable marks on this extremely well-preserved coin. An MS65 example of this variety, certified in a PCGS green-label holder, was lot 3803 in our Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5-6/2012), where it realized $9,775. (NGC ID# 24FS, Variety PCGS# 39795, Base PCGS# 6154)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
