Description
Probable Finest Known 1833 Half, MS65
O-109, Ex: Eliasberg
1833 50C MS65 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. O-109, R.3. Perfect die
state. This variety is characterized by a single-use reverse that
shows a die defect line from the right base of I to C in AMERICA.
While not visible in the NGC encasement, the Eliasberg catalog
notes that the edge has OR and HALF together, a problem that was
frequently encountered with the Castaing machine. The Castaing
machine imparted edge ornamentation, and sometimes produced
blundered edge inscriptions.The surfaces are smooth, satiny, and unblemished. An indent in the left obverse field is the eagle's wing from die clashing. The silvery-gray patina shows a slight undertone of red on each side. A lovely, well-balanced example. Stephen Herrman's latest ranking for Bust halves has this piece listed as "Finest Known?" and we believe if it is not the finest, it is certainly tied for finest.
