Description

1834 O-116 Capped Half, MS66
Small Date, Small Letters

1834 50C Small Date, Small Letters, O-116, R.1, MS66 PCGS. The mintage of 1834 Capped Bust half dollars was the second most impressive of the series, boasting a little under 6.5 million coins, only surpassed in 1836. The O-116 is one of the more interesting die pairings as it features a repunched outline around the Liberty's bust, and while later die states of O-116 lap the outline away, the present example's is readily intact. This piece displays alluring, rich silver luster alongside developing golden and russet-red patina. There are no noteworthy abrasions or marks that would detract from the distinct appeal. The strike shows some significant weakness on the reverse as the A in STATE, while the URI in PLURIBUS is illegible. The present piece is the highest rated O-116 within the Herrman Census. PCGS Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer (3/26).
