Description

1836 50C Lettered Edge MS62 PCGS. O-101a, R.1. A small die spur attached to the bottom of the 6 in the date, as well as a recut star 6, is diagnostic for this obverse. Stars 7 and 11 are also recut, but it is less evident on this specimen. The loop of the 5 in the denomination is nearly closed, and a die crack from the edge through the tip of the left (facing) wing and two olive leaves identifies this later die state example. Flashy luster accents the light to medium gray toned surfaces. The hair beneath the cap is a trifle soft, and the crossbars on the shield lack definition, which is typical for this variety. The rest of the design elements, however, are nearly full. An attractive example of this late Bust half dollar issue. (Registry values: N1793)
