Description

1818 O-112 Half Dollar, MS66
Ex: Eliasberg and Friend Collections
Top of the Condition Census

1818 50C O-112, R.1, MS66 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg-Friend. According to Stephen Herrman, this is the finest known 1818 O-112 half dollar of any die state. It shows an intermediate die state that is later than some examples of O-112, but is an earlier strike than the true O-112a late die state that is considered a rarity. The Eliasberg Collection of Capped Bust half dollars was particularly memorable for its considerable number of exceptional coins, including the present Premium Gem that was conservatively graded a little over two decades ago as MS63.

A highly lustrous example, this piece has delicate golden-brown and iridescent toning over virtually flawless surfaces. The central design elements are a trifle shallow at the lower curls and clasp, although the bold peripheral details and a sharp reverse strike compensate.
Ex: George H. Earle Collection (Henry Chapman, 6/1912); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Estate (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1755; Dale Friend Collection of Bust Half Dollars / ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2018), lot 5132; the present consignor.
