Description

1834 Half Dollar, MS65+
O-104, Large Date, Small Letters
Finest-Known Example of the Variety

1834 50C Large Date, Small Letters, O-104, R.2, MS65+ PCGS Gold Shield. Five die marriages make up the Large Date, Small Letters Guide Book variety. Overton-104 is a rare die marriage in high grade, with only a handful of pieces known in MS64 and MS65. The Stephen Herrman Census lists two MS65s tied for finest. This Plus-graded piece surpasses them as the finest-known O-104 half dollar. Struck from an early die state, this piece is sharp throughout save for on a few border stars and on the left edge of the shield. Vibrant cartwheel luster illuminates well-preserved surfaces, and lovely peach-gold, lilac, sea-green, and olive-gray toning covers each side. A loupe reveals no bothersome abrasions. Population (Large Date, Small Letters): 18 in 65 (4 in 65+), 2 finer (1/19).
