    1836 Half Dollar, MS62 Prooflike
    Rare O-116a Late Die State

1836 50C Lettered Edge, 50/00, O-116a, R.6, MS62 Prooflike PCGS. Overton-116, the blundered denomination variety, is a popular Guide Book entry. It is Rarity-2, which makes it readily collectible. But Overton's late die state, O-116a, is a formidable rarity. The reverse die was lapped, presumably to remove the tell-tale curve of a 0 west of the 5 in 50. The lapping also separated the upper berry stem from the branch. The dentils between 2 and 6 o'clock are absent due to die wear. The present example is the finest known example of O-116a. It is also the only 1836 half dollar certified as Prooflike by PCGS (3/20). Proofs were struck from O-116 dies, and the present piece was struck after the die pair resumed business coinage. The motifs are fully frosted, the fields are glassy, and there is no indication of wear. The coin displays light russet-gold toning.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
