Description
1815 B-1 Quarter, MS61
Enigmatic 'E' Counterstamp
1815 25C B-1, R.1, "E" Counterstamp, MS61 NGC. CAC. Tompkins
Die State 4/2 with a single clash of the scroll above the date.
Broad, deep blue-green borders surround russet-brown centers. The
well-struck surfaces are coruscating and free from relevant
abrasions. A number of 1815 and 1825 quarters, typically in better
grades, display "E" or "L" clash marks. They first appeared in the
marketplace during the 1870s, and have been the subject of
considerable inconclusive discussion over the years.Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 6356, which realized $2,185; Denis W. Loring Capped Bust Quarter Collection; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2019), lot 3126.
