1815 B-1 Quarter, MS61
Enigmatic 'E' Counterstamp

1815 25C B-1, R.1, "E" Counterstamp, MS61 NGC. CAC. Tompkins Die State 4/2 with a single clash of the scroll above the date. Broad, deep blue-green borders surround russet-brown centers. The well-struck surfaces are coruscating and free from relevant abrasions. A number of 1815 and 1825 quarters, typically in better grades, display "E" or "L" clash marks. They first appeared in the marketplace during the 1870s, and have been the subject of considerable inconclusive discussion over the years.
