The Finest Certified 1815 Quarter Dollar
Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint Plate Coin
1815 25C B-1, R.1, MS67 CACG. Ex: Col. Green. Coinage at the
Philadelphia Mint was limited in 1815 to quarter dollars, half
dollars, and half eagles. The copper supply was exhausted the
previous year with no new planchets shipped from England due to
trade embargos during the War of 1812. The 89,235 quarters minted
in 1815 were from a single die pair, as were the 47,150 half
dollars, and the 635 half eagles.The 1815 quarters represented the first appearance of John Reich's Capped Bust design for the denomination. The Reich design appeared earlier on half dollars in 1807 and dimes in 1809. Half dimes with the new design first appeared more than a decade later in 1829, and the design never appeared on silver dollars.
This early die state piece is the Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint plate coin and it is the finest certified 1815 quarter. NGC currently claims one other MS67 example, but that coin has traditionally been ranked second to the "Col." Green-Eric P. Newman example. The Newman coin until recently was housed in an MS67+★ NGC holder, and its residence now in an MS67 CACG holder affirms its remarkable standing at the top of the Condition Census. PCGS has never certified an 1815 quarter finer than MS66 (11/23).
The obverse of this original, richly toned, and eye-appealing specimen exhibits light champagne toning, with interior rings of blue, magenta, and orange-gold around a light silver center. The reverse also displays light silver at the center, with peripheral russet, blue, and gold toning. This is a stunning example of the first year Capped Bust quarter dollar.
