Description

1815 25C E Counterstamp AU58 NGC. B-1, R.1. A certain number of 1825 quarters also exist with the E counterstamp, and both dates also exist with an "L" counterstamped above the head. Many hypotheses have been presented to explain these E and L counterstamped coins, however, none to date have been proven. Most recently, a plausible suggested links these coins to the Economite Hoard of silver coinage uncovered in western Pennsylvania. Given that many of these turned up in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio (Economy, PA is northwest of Pittsburgh and southeast of Youngstown, Ohio), this suggestion is as good as any yet proposed. An intricately struck near-Mint example with orange, sea-green, and mauve colors. Population: 7 in 58, 7 finer (12/04).(#5321) (Registry values: P3)
