Description

1815 B-1 Quarter, AU Sharpness
'E' Counterstamp, Eye Appeal Remains

1815 25C "E" Counterstamp, B-1, R.1 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. The puzzling "E" counterstamp above Liberty's cap has mystified numismatists for decades, and continues to do so to this day. Counterstamp collectors will view this quarter as an opportunity, since they are normally less concerned with the condition of the host coin than obtaining a sharp example of the countermark. They will have competition for the present example, however, since the noted cleaning is minor. The coin displays an overall glossiness rather than any overt hairlines or other distractions. Pleasing purplish-umber toning remains at the margins and surrounds the raised devices of this sharply defined, still-lustrous quarter.
