1815 B-1 Quarter, Vibrantly Toned MS62
'E' Counterstamp, Baffling Numismatic Mystery
1815 25C "E" Counterstamp B-1, R.1, MS62 NGC. No sooner does
a theory about the origin of the mysterious "E" and "L"
counterstamps on 1815 and 1825 quarters gain traction, than a new
conjecture adds to the conundrum. In 2004, Ted McAuley satisfied
many scholars by tying the countermarks to a voting or accounting
method used by the Economite Society of Economite, Pennsylvania.
More recently, Karl Moulton discussed the topic at length in his
book on the early Mint, suggesting a shipment of quarters to
Planters Bank of New Orleans was the source (Planters Bank was no
stranger to issuing counterstamped coins). Today, the purpose and
issuer of the counterstamps remain elusive. There is no debate
about the originality or eye appeal of this Uncirculated example of
the E-marked 1815 quarter. Bright mint luster at the borders
enhance its album-toned patina. Marks are limited to a few stray
abrasions and Mint-related die clashing.From The Hamilton Collection, Part III.
