Description
Sharp 1815 Quarter
MS66, B-1
1815 25C MS66 NGC. B-1, R.1, the only dies. U.S. quarter
production was quite high in 1807, when 220,643 pieces were minted.
This was due to a decrease in the number of two reales in
circulation. No more quarters were made until 1815. In a
Numismatic News article titled "Revised Liberty Appeared on
Quarters in 1815," Robert Julian outlines the events leading up to
the resumption of quarter coinage in that year. He writes that the
Planter's Bank of New Orleans sent several kegs of Mexican dollars,
worth about $14,400 dollars, to the Mint, accompanied by a June 15
letter from bank cashier Bailly Blanchard requesting that the
entire amount be struck into quarter dollars. Mint Treasurer James
Rush replied on July 15 "that it was not very convenient to provide
quarter dollars," and would the Planter's Bank take dimes instead?
Blanchard replied on August 14 that dimes would not be acceptable,
as they were not widely used in the area, the public instead
preferring the one-real pieces, worth 12 and-one-half cents. The
Mint then suggested half dollars, which Blanchard again
refused.The Mint finally agreed to honor the Planter's Bank request for quarter dollars. Julian says that additional deliveries of 1815 quarters were made to the Bank of Pennsylvania, and to Jones, Firth & Co.
Gunmetal-blue toning hugs the margins of this Premium Gem example, transitioning into purple and golden-brown, the entire color palette being somewhat more extensive on the reverse. Lustrous surfaces exhibit sharply struck design elements, and have been well cared for. In sum, this is a great early quarter that will find a home in a high-grade collection. Census: 5 in 66, 1 finer (10/08).
