Finest Known 1815 Bust Quarter

1815 25C MS67 NGC. B-1, R.1. Die State II. Only one variety is known of this important date. The mintage comprised 69,232 pieces delivered December 16 of 1815, and 20,003 coins delivered January 10, 1816. This was the first day after Mint reopened and the day before the fire which destroyed the apparatus for making gold and silver planchets. As a result of the fire the following day, no Quarters were struck in 1816 or 1817. This is the finest example known of this popular and widely collected date. The Condition Census as listed in the 1992 edition of Browning is (65, 64, 64, 64, 64, 63-seven pieces). As a Die State II coin the fields show evidence of die clashing. However, aside from these clash marks there is virtually nothing that interrupts the flow of the thick, frosted mint luster that covers each side. Both obverse and reverse are deeply patinated with gray and emerald-green centers that are surrounded by a deep scarlet-gray toning around the margins. The striking definition is strong throughout with even pressure applied to all the design elements. An extraordinary coin and a singular opportunity for the type or date collector.(#5321) (Registry values: P3)
