Description

Untoned MS 63 1815 Quarter

1815 MS 63 PCGS. While there is only one variety for 1815, there appear to be two different styles of punches used for the stars this year. This was first brought to our attention by Karl Moulton, who has done extensive study into the mysterious L and E countermark coins. The simplest demonstration of this is to look at page 33 of the Norweb II Sale where both are pictured. This coin appears to be the variant with larger stars that have hollow centers. Which is scarcer?
This is a brilliant coin that has sufficient luster for the grade and yet is not lustrous enough to warrant a higher designation. The striking details are uncommonly bold throughout and there are only the most trivial abrasions, none worthy of individual mention. Population: 6 in 63, only 5 finer (6/96).
