Wonderfully Original 1815 Quarter in Gem BU
1815 25C MS 65 NGC. B-1, the only known dies, R.1. Die State II. Following a delivery of 220,643 pieces in 1807, the Philadelphia Mint idled its quarter dollar presses in favor of the half dollar denomination. Revived in 1815, John Reich's Capped Bust design had substituted Robert Scot's Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle motif of 1804-1807. Only 89,235 quarters were produced in 1815, and we have not offered a Gem representative since our 1998 FUN Signature Sale. The present specimen is richly toned in charcoal patina with softer cobalt-blue and apricot undertones. Perfectly centered with uncommonly crisp striking detail, the surfaces are distraction-free with a thick, frosty texture. A coin for the advanced specialist or Gem first-year type collector.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 5321, GSID# 5061)
