1818 Capped Bust Quarter, B-2, MS65
Rarely Seen Any Finer
1818 25C B-2, R.1, MS65 NGC. Tompkins Die State 2/1. The
1818 is among the most plentiful large size Capped Bust quarters in
Mint State, ideal for type representation. Yet, Gem-quality
examples are seldom seen, and anything finer is rare. This piece is
essentially untoned with frosty luster and bold design elements.
The obverse is cracked along the upper-right periphery, but neither
die is yet clashed in this moderately early state. A few faint
marks on Liberty's cheek are all that preclude an even finer
designation. Due to the extreme rarity of higher-grade examples,
many of the MS65 coins reported by the grading services may reflect
resubmissions and not actual coins. Census (all varieties
