1818 B-2 Quarter, MS65
Exemplary Preservation and Eye Appeal

1818 25C B-2, R.1, MS65 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 4/2. Star 13 is repunched, and each side exhibits dramatic die clash. Quarter dollar production resumed in 1815 after an eight-year hiatus, but Steve Tompkins writes that it was "primarily due to a specific request from the Planters Bank of New Orleans, who insisted on only quarter dollars in return for their silver deposit." Only three years later in 1818 did the manufacture of Capped Bust quarters reflect demand from the general public. By that point, Spanish two reales had largely disappeared from circulation, and an alternative was finally needed. The Mint struck 361,174 quarters in 1818 from five obverse dies and seven reverse dies. Browning-2, one of 10 known die varieties, is easily the most available. Nevertheless, Gems are of the utmost rarity.

Blended gold, crimson, and cobalt-blue hues adorn the rims, yielding to fully frosted and brilliant interiors. Liberty's curls display strong detail, as do the eagle's fletchings and talons. Virtually unimprovable technical quality and extraordinary eye appeal place this Gem in the top echelon of survivors. Population (all varieties): 23 in 65, 4 finer (2/16).
