Description

1818 B-4 Quarter, MS63
Sharp Strike and Lightly Toned, CAC

1818 25C B-4, R.2, MS63 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die State 4/2. This coin is struck from a middle die state, with numerous obverse die cracks (including the so-called "Scarface" die crack) but before the dies reclashed and prior to the appearance of any reverse die cracks. Golden accents surround the silver centers of this Select Mint State example. While the B-4 variety is not always sharply struck, this example is needle-sharp throughout the obverse and shows only a touch of weakness on the eagle's leg. CAC endorsement confirms high quality for the grade. Ten die pairs were needed to strike 361,174 quarters in 1818 -- a sign that the flow of Spanish colonial two reales pieces in circulation had slowed. PCGS Population (all varieties combined): 26 in 63, 79 finer (2/25).
