    Description

    1818 B-9 Quarter, AU58
    Rarest 1818 Variety
    Likely Tied for Finest Known

1818 25C B-9, High R.5, AU58 NGC. CAC. Die State a according to Rea, Peterson et al. The B-9 die pairing is the rarest of the 10 marriages known for the 1818 quarters, struck from five obverse and seven reverse dies. The obverse here shows a triple dentil under the first 1 in the date, and a short die line proceeds into the field from the innermost point of star 2. The reverse features a widely spaced 25 in the denomination, the 5 leaning right, and a double dentil below the C in 25 C.

This scarcely circulated coin shows great eye appeal over silvery surfaces with a dusting of rose and gold patina scattered about each side. There are heavy signs of die clashing at the upper obverse and lower reverse, along with a bold die crack from the rim through the N in UNITED and to the eagle's left (facing) wing. Smaller die cracks show under the left wing and from P in PLURIBUS. This piece appears about tied for the finest known according to the Rea-Peterson Condition Census in Early Quarter Dollars, another fantastic appealing and very rare quarter variety from this marvelous consignment.
