Finest Certified 1818 B-5 Quarter
In Gem Condition

1818 25C MS65 NGC. B-5, R.5. The 1818 B-5 is a rare die marriage, especially in XF grade or finer, and few Mint State pieces are known. The B-5 can be recognized by the repunching on star 9 and defective left bottom serif of the second 1 on the obverse, with star 1 pointing to a drapery fold, while on the reverse OF AMERICA is widely spaced, and a center dot appears between the sixth and seventh crossbar. Blended dove-gray, plum-mauve, and autumn-gold attest to the originality of this satiny and well struck Gem example. Examination with a loupe fails to reveal evenly remotely mentionable marks. The reverse fields are brighter than the obverse, and the piece is sharply struck throughout, save for a small area of softness on stars 5-7.
This is the finest NGC-certified example of B-5 by 20 points. Steve Tompkins' Condition Census in Early United States Quarters 1796-1838 shows this piece to be two points finer than an MS63 that appeared in a Superior auction (1/1988, lot 1380) and to be the finest of the three Mint State examples of B-5 that he enumerates. The second finest-certified that we have ever handled at Heritage is an AU55 NGC coin (3/2008, lot 477).
