Description

Gem 1818 Quarter, B-3
Ex: Oliver Jung Collection

1818 25C MS65 PCGS. CAC. B-3, R.3. The obverse of this die pairing is the same as the 1818/5 B-1 except that the obverse die was lapped to remove nearly all of the underdigit 5. That also weakened the left bottom serifs of both 1s in the date, here more visible on the second 1. The 81 is widely spaced, and star 1 points to an upper drapery fold, not a lower fold (as on the somewhat-similar B-7). This Gem PCGS example sports incredible luster that is abundantly evident through gray toning that turns sea-green at the margins. The strike is sharp at the margins but a bit weak in the centers. The only singular contact is a single mark on the high point of Liberty's cheek. This piece appears to be the first Gem B-3 PCGS example we have offered in many years.
