    Description

Stunning Gem 1818 Quarter Dollar, B-8

1818 25C MS65 PCGS. CAC. B-8, R.3. Steve Tompkins, in his newly released Early United States Quarters, provides six entries in the Condition Census for this variety, with the finest four pieces certified MS64 quarters. Number six in the census is AU58 with the notation "multiples." As such, it is conservative to say that the specimen offered here has a place in the Condition Census for the variety. B-8 is most quickly identified by observing the three closely grouped dentils under the first 1 in the date. Since this obverse die was used with three other 1818 die marriages, the reverse die must also be attributed. Doing so is quickly accomplished by noting that the I in PLURIBUS is centered under the left side of the second T in STATES. This is an earlier die state.
This splendidly original example displays bold cartwheel luster and pleasing amber coloration throughout. Population: 20 in 65, 4 finer--all varieties considered (11/08).
