Description

Select Uncirculated 1818 Quarter

1818 MS 63 PCGS. B-6c, R.5. The soft, satin-like luster is virtually free of color, presenting as essentially brilliant with just the slightest overlay of golden-brown patina. The striking details are a bit soft, especially in the centers. No doubt much of the weakness on the reverse is due to the Mint backing off of the striking pressure. An extensive network of die cracks is seen on the reverse, this surely being the result of excessive pressure which caused the die to crack. Backing off the pressure would have extended the life of this already stressed die, but the trade-off would have been that the coins produced after the pressure was decreased would be softly impressed on the highpoints.
