Not Sold Description
1818 25C MS 65 NGC. B-3. Die State One. As a variety, B-3 has a rarity ranking of 1. Since most of the extant examples are of Die State Two, however, Browning has assigned Die State One representatives an R.8 ranking. The present example displays numerous clashmarks in the reverse field and remnants of the 5 underdigit over the raised areas of the second 8 in the date. These features are diagnostic of Die State One.
This is an exquisite coin whose desirability is assured by the smooth, originally toned surfaces. Both sides are richly colored in antique-copper and charcoal shades with rainbow tinted undertones. The strike is generally sharp, but bluntness of detail over the eagle's left (facing) wing is characteristic of this variety. There are no mentionable post-production distractions. In addition to its importance for high quality type purposes, this coin should elicit strong bids from advanced Capped Bust quarter specialists.
