1818 B-3 Quarter, MS65
Second Overdate Obverse Die Use

1818/5 25C B-3, R.3, MS65 NGC. The overdate obverse die is in its second use on this piece, with remnants of the overdate still visible on the flat upper surface of the second 8. The reverse die is cracked through the lower arrow, nearly reaching the shield, and also shows clash marks below the scroll. Another crack is faintly visible from the uppermost olive leaf, across the left wing tip, to the U in UNITED.

About a dozen Gem or finer examples of 1818 B-3 are known, and these pieces are candidates for type, date, and variety collectors. This one exhibits radiant, frosty luster beneath deep champagne and iridescent toning. Census: 26 in 65, 13 finer (3/14), for all 1818 varieties.(Registry values: P3)
