Popular Overdated 1818 Quarter
1818/5 MS 63 NGC. B-1, R.1. A select uncirculated survivor of the Large Size Bust quarter type. This is a popular variety as an overdate which was caused, in part, by the fire in the Philadelphia Mint in 1815. This particular obverse die was never used in 1815 and was subsequently repunched in 1818 to help curtail production costs. The subdued, satiny luster is overlaid with a mild golden-brown patina. Some of the central striking details are softly defined, but there are very few abrasions for a coin in MS 63.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 5323, GSID# 5099)
