Description

1819 Small 9 Quarter, AU55
B-3, Struck from Perfect Dies

1819 25C Small 9 AU55 NGC. B-3, R.1. An early die state of the Small (also called Normal) 9 variety, this example has none of the die cracks found on later states of the dies. The B-3 obverse shows the 8 in the date evenly spaced between the two 1s. The denomination is broadly recut at the 5 followed by double periods, diagnostic of the reverse die. A dappling of charcoal-gray toning surrounds the margins of this smooth, pearl-gray quarter, interspersed with remaining mint luster. The coin is a well-struck and problem-free -- a Choice AU example. Census: 15 in 55, 43 finer (1/14).
