Description
1819 Quarter, Sharp, Lustrous Near-Gem
Small 9, B-3, Blundered Reverse
1819 25C Small 9 MS64 PCGS. CAC. B-3, R.1. The decade of the
1810s was fertile ground for Mint engraving blunders, and no doubt
as well for numismatic curiosities created intentionally or through
neglect and carelessness on the part of engravers and die-sinkers.
The half dollars of this decade are full of overdates, recuttings,
die clashes, shattered dies, punctuated dates, and other
oddities. The quarters of the decade show similar anomalies but were produced in numbers far smaller than those of the half dollars. About 20 times as many half dollars as quarters were minted from 1810-1819, and the quarters were only struck bearing three dates during the decade -- 1815, 1818, and 1819. (Half dollars were struck every year except 1816, when only large cents were produced due to a Mint fire.) The quarters of 1819 are divided into Small 9 and Large 9 Guide Book varieties, and two die pairings are known for each.
This Small 9 quarter variety shows a Curl Base 2 in the date (as does the other Small 9, B-4, as both share the same reverse), with repunching showing on the base of the 2, more boldly on the entire 5, and two punchings of the period after the denomination, one much higher than the other. The obverse shows the 8 equally spaced between the 1s. This near-Gem example shows beautiful, flashy luster over surfaces that are largely untoned to pinkish-gold, complementing an added strip of deep bluish-copper color on the reverse. This piece is sharply struck and an excellent example for type purposes. Population: 5 in 64, 4 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P3)
