Finest Known Example of the B-4 Variety
Ex: Eliasberg

1820 25C Small 0, B-4, R.2, MS66 NGC. Original, coin-gray surfaces give way to a multitude of color in the protected areas. Liberty is outlined by shades of gold and russet, and the date and stars exhibit a similar effect. Tan hues outline the reverse eagle, while aqua and gold are seen at the reverse rims. This is an outstanding example of early 19th century U.S. coinage combining pedigree, high technical grade, and strong eye appeal.

Variety: The present coin is a B-4, identified by the small 0 in the date, small obverse stars, and die pitting to the left of 2 on the reverse.

Population Data (3/15): For the date, NGC counts five in MS66 (two in MS66+, one in MS66 ★ ) with two finer. For the B-4 variety, Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint places this coin at the top of the census.

Heritage Commentary: Early quarter dollar varieties have been avidly pursued for a long time. John Haseltine's Type Table identified this variety in 1881, and Ard W. Browning formalized the attributions for this series in The Early Quarter Dollars of the United States (1925).
