Description

1820 Possible Proof Obverse with a Business Strike Reverse. An intriguing coin that has a long and illustrious pedigree that stretches back to the turn of the century. It is a breathtaking coin with an elegant mix of silver, blue, and rose colored centers that deepens to an electric blue and sea-green at the borders. R This coin is believed to be unique and has been cataloged as a one-sided proof for the past 35 years. The best, and most technically expert, description was done in 1957 by Walter Breen while cataloging for New Netherlands: "1820 Small O, Large 5 as in 1821. B-4, Rarity-2. A superb, almost flawless prooflike 'gem.' Evenly centered, irregular toning around the borders, an excellent impression from dies, which, though retaining polish, have acquired some rust. Not a strict Proof, as the reverse displays some mint bloom; not a restrike, as the reverse comes worse rusted on coins dated 1821, including some Proofs. Conceivably this could be a one-sided Proof, like some of the cents of the 1820s and 1830s mentioned by Newcomb. Whatever it is, this lot is a thing of beauty and the best of the variety we have seen. R A magnificent prize for the quarter dollar collector--the "rarest of the rare." Ex: Auction '88 (Superior Session, 7/88), lot 1069 where it realized $9,500, flip accompanies; Norweb Sale Part II (B&M, 3/88), lot 1532; Mai Evans and Eliasberg Duplicates (New Netherlands, 6/57), lot 1146; Wayte Raymond privately; Hillyer C.
