Description

1821 B-3 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar, MS64
Lightly Toned, Condition Census for Variety

1821 25C B-3, R.2, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die State 3/1. Die lines between stars 2 and 3 are lapped away, but die clashing of the shield lines near the ear remain. This is a frosty example with areas of prooflikeness interspersed along the obverse border. The reverse is fully frosty. Pearlescent silver luster at the centers melds with orange-gold toning at the rims. The strike is razor-sharp on the central devices and on the obverse stars except 5 and 6. Light die rust remains near the olive leaves.

Acquired by our consignor in January, 1988, the coin remains in its old green label holder graded MS64, now with CAC endorsement. As such, it is solidly at the high end of the Condition Census for the variety although not mentioned in the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census. The attractive light toning and strong mint luster put it near the the finest of the variety both in technical merit and eye appeal. Population (all varieties): 10 in 64, 12 finer (7/16). CAC: 2 in 64, 2 finer (7/16).
Ex: Heritage by private purchase 1/1988.
