Extremely Rare B-6

1821 25C B-6, R.7, VF20 PCGS Secure. Tompkins Die State 1/2. The 1821 B-6 was one of the few die varieties overlooked by Ard Browning in his classic 1925 reference. The obverse die later coined B-1 and B-2, but the reverse die is unique to B-6, and is distinguished by a large period, a high O in OF, and a low D in UNITED. Coincidentally, both B-4 and B-6 have a die scratch from a leaf tip to the rim, though the B-4 die scratch is vertical and the B-6 die line is diagonal.

According to Walter Breen (1992), Aram Haroutunian discovered B-6 in January 1991. Haroutunian found a second example that same month. The third discovery coin, unknown to Breen's update of Browning, was purchased a year later by Jules Reiver, who relentlessly pursued early U.S. coins by die variety over several decades. A fourth example, in prooflike Gem Uncirculated condition, emerged in 1998 from the John J. Pittman Collection, where it had resided since its unattributed appearance in a 1947 Numismatic Gallery auction of the Wayne E. Kimball Collection. Today, six examples are known, with the Pittman piece at the top of the Condition Census, trailed by three coins graded VF25 to VF20, a fifth graded Very Good, and an AG3 example.

The present lot is the Reiver specimen. The cream-gray surfaces are lightly hairlined but marks are limited to a thin line above the 8 in the date. Portions of the plumage west of the shield are softly brought up, but all legends and dentils are bold. To the best knowledge of the cataloger, only two of the six examples have ever appeared in a public auction; the Kimball-Pittman-Pogue Gem that brought $94,000 in 2015, and the present lot.
