Sharply Struck MS63 1821 Quarter, B-3
1821 25C MS63 NGC. B-3, R.2. With a mintage of 216,851 pieces, the 1821 is a relatively available coin in lower (circulated) grades. That certainly does not hold true for Uncirculated examples, though. It is so elusive, in fact, that the Breen-Bowers quarter book does not mention any specific examples. Rather, it opts to cite major collections that lacked this date in Uncirculated, such as Landau, NN #52, Eugene Gardner, and Scanlon.This is a sharply struck example that has even gray-golden patina over each side. There are no reportable abrasions, just a mint-made grease stain located in the center of the obverse across the coronet and Liberty's hair curls. A bit lackluster for a higher grade. Population: 9 in 63, 19 finer (1/05).
