Description

1821 Quarter, MS66
B-4, Upper Condition Census Coin

1821 25C MS66 NGC. B-4, R.3. Mint records indicate 216,851 quarters were produced in 1821, but Steve Tompkins notes in Early United States Quarters 1796-1838 that "due to the use of 1820 dated dies, the total amount of 1821 dated coins is less than the stated mintage would suggest." This example is remarkably preserved for a coin nearly two centuries old, sharply struck with no marks worthy of note. Bright, reflective fields are edged with taupe patina that highlights silver centers on both sides. Circulated early Capped Bust quarters are not plentiful, and Mint State examples are rare. NGC has certified just four pieces as MS66 (not distinguished by variety or Prooflike status), and only one coin is finer (9/12).(Registry values: P2)
