    Description

    VF Details 1822 B-2 Quarter
    With '25/50C' Denomination

1822 25C 25/50C -- Obverse Scratched -- NGC Details. VF. B-2, R.5. The reverse die is sufficient all alone for the attribution combined with the 1822-dated obverse. Walter Breen writes that this popular Guide Book variety "is very rare, not because of die failure, but because this die was laid aside in horror as soon as impressions were examined. It in 1828 [for the B-3], when the new Mint Engraver William Kneass could blame it on his late predecessor, and excuse the exhumation on grounds of economy." The obverse of this piece show numerous long, straight, clearly intentional pinscratches through the portrait that account for the caveat. The all-important reverse is unimpaired.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 23RN, PCGS# 5333)
