Description

1822 B-1 Quarter, Toned MS61

1822 25C B-1, R.2, MS61 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/1. The 1822 quarter is a scarce date in spite of what appears to be a sufficient mintage of 64,080 coins. Only two die varieties are known, one with a flat based 2 in the denomination and the other a 25 / 50 overpunched denomination. Each side displays subdued light gray and violet patina. The strike details are flat over the high points, as usually found. There are no abrasions present that merit comment. NGC Census for the B-1 variety: 1 in 61, 2 finer (10/19).
