1822 25C B-1, R.2, MS65 PCGS Secure. Tompkins Die State 1/1. The 1822 Capped Bust quarter claims a small mintage of 64,080 pieces, making a fairly challenging issue as a date. A single obverse die was paired with three reverse dies to produce the three die varieties of the date. This coin represents the most available B-1 variety, with a normal reverse (the elusive B-2 variety has a blundered 25/50 denomination and the newly discovered unique B-3 has broken arrowheads). Although the B-1 is easily located in most grades, it is extremely elusive at the MS65 grade level, where this coin is tied with one other example at PCGS and a single specimen at NGC for second place in the Condition Census (11/18).

The Capped Bust quarters were first studied and attributed by die varieties in the 1870s, by Captain John W. Haseltine and John Colvin Randall. In his famous Type Table catalog from November 1881, Haseltine described the 1822 B-1 quarter in lot 1330 as:

"1822; No. 1; upper left star points to the junction of the upper curl with the band on the forehead; rev., P and I in 'Pluribus' are slightly to the left of being under the centres of S and second T in 'States' very fine; scarce."

The lot realized $3.40, a strong price for the time. No examples in MS65 condition have appeared at auction since the advent of third-party grading, but recent sales include the finest-known MS67 PCGS example from lot 3896 of the Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2015), which realized a record price of $164,500.

The present coin is a spectacular Gem, with well-detailed design elements that exhibit just a touch of the usual softness on the star centers and the eagle's right (facing) claw. Traces of lavender and sea-green toning visit the well-preserved surfaces, with vibrant mint luster underneath. Two short parallel scratches directly below the bust serve as a pedigree marker. This coin's amazing technical quality and outstanding eye appeal make this lot an important opportunity for the series specialist. This coin is pictured on PCGS CoinFacts.
