Description
Interesting 1822 Bust Quarter, Ex: Norweb
1822 25C MS 60 Cleaned. B-1, High R.3. This coin was originally offered as lot 1536 in the Norweb Collection Sale (Bowers & Merena, 3/88) where it was described as: "MS 64, prooflike, or Proof 64. This piece, with nearly full Proof surfaces, including within the shield stripes, matches certain of those designated as Proof by Walter Breen." We do not, however, feel that these features are significant enough to call this coin a proof. Both sides are definitely flashy, but this may be due to an old cleaning. In either case, the surfaces have toned in deep cobalt-green color around the peripheries with lighter hues over the centers. The strike is above average for the issue, yet not particularly sharp, and we leave it to the bidder to decide for himself/herself on this coin's true status.Ex: Norweb Collection (Bowers & Merena, 3/88), lot 1536, where it realized $4,950.
