Description

Extremely Rare 1823/2 Quarter

1823/2 25C --Repaired, Cleaned, Corroded, Graffiti--ANACS. VF Details, Net VG10. B-1, R.6. Only one variety is known of this very rare issue. Mint records indicate that 117,800 pieces were struck of this year, but it is one of the two rarest dates in the entire Quarter series. It is generally thought that the vast portion of this issue was melted and the bullion then converted into other denominations. Only the most advanced collections contain an example of the 1823 Quarter. Although we are not certain of the pedigree of this piece, it may well be the Ex: Steigerwalt, Ten Eyck: 518 coin that is plugged above the head, affecting the 5 C on the lower reverse. Deep blue-gray patina is seen over both sides and tends to subdue the coin's impairments. This coin certainly has its problems, but it is a genuine 1823 Quarter and it even with all its problems we anticipate strong bidding activity.
