    Description

    Formidably Rare 1823/2 Bust Quarter

1823/2 25C VF30 NGC. B-1, R.6. Just one die pairing is known of this rare issue. Despite an original mintage of 117,800 pieces, if the mint records are trustworthy, it remains one of the two scarcest dates in the entire Bust Quarter series. It is generally believed that the lion's share of this issue's coins were melted.
Only the most exclusive collections contain an 1823 Quarter, and over the past 10 years Heritage has sold just two others, those being a repaired specimen in our 2002 ANA which realized nearly $14,000, and an ANACS VF35 coin which brought $57,500 in the Orlando FUN sale earlier this year. This equally desirable representative displays balanced wear in addition to pleasing olive-brown and iridescent turquoise-blue surfaces. A single thin, shallow mark is the only one noticeable under the obverse toning, which is located in the left field area between Liberty's nose and star 5. The reverse is just as carefully preserved. Bust Quarter specialists will no doubt be very interested in this coin, one of the most challenging rarities in the entire series.
