1824/2 Quarter, B-1, AU55
Conditionally Elusive
1824/2 25C B-1, R.3, AU55 NGC. B-1 is the only die variety
for the 1824 quarter, employing an overdated obverse with an
underlying 2 evident in the recesses of the 4. The 1824/2 quarter
is a recognized scarcity in all grades, but is sometimes available
in lower circulated levels; cleaned or otherwise damaged pieces in
this grade range are seemingly abundant. In XF, this issue becomes
distinctly rare, and AU coins are exceedingly so; only five Mint
State pieces are reported by NGC and PCGS combined, the finest a
sole Gem example at NGC, possibly the same as the Eliasberg Gem,
formerly from the John G. Mills Collection.This piece shows hints of luster in the peripheral recesses, with pale lavender-gray toning that shows the occasional splash of amber-gold, olive, and aquamarine color. The strike is even and the devices exhibit just slight high-point wear. A pleasing, upper-end example of this conditionally rare issue.
