Description

1824/2 Quarter, B-1, VF30
Eye-Appealing for the Grade

1824/2 25C B-1, R.3, VF30 PCGS. The sole die pair known for the year, the B-1 quarter was overdated 1824 over an earlier unused 1822 obverse die. This die could have been among the last produced by Mint Engraver Robert Scot, who died on Nov. 1, 1823, or one of the first produced by contract engraver Christian Gobrecht, according to the Steve Tompkins reference, where he theorizes that the 1824/2 quarters may have been the delivery of December 31, 1823. (William Kneass was hired as chief engraver on January 29, 1824.) The surfaces are a melange of dusky rose, gold, pink, slate, and steel-blue, with scattered marks on each side and contact marks consistent with the grade. More eye appeal is present than might be surmised from the grade.
