Description

Popular and Scarce 1825/2 Quarter, AU55, B-1

1825/2 25C AU55 NGC. B-1, R.5. Tompkins Die Stage 1. The B-1 variety is the rarest of the three 1825 die marriages, and it is extremely difficult to locate in higher grades. This example is a tad below the Reiver coin for overall quality. In his revision of Browning, Walter Breen recorded two die states, either perfect or with die crumbling inside the digit 5. More recently, Steve Tompkins has described it as an 1825/4/2 overdate, putting forth the theory that the original die was produced by Robert Scot, then overdated by Christian Gobrecht, and finally resurrected and overdated again by William Kneass in late 1825. Little die crumbling is evident on the present piece; in fact, the die stage appears remarkably similar to that in the Tompkins reference. The surfaces have a blend of pewter, pale gold, and grayish-lilac color. The surfaces are reasonably problem-free, with evidence of underlying luster.(Registry values: P4)
