Description

1825/4/(2) 25C B-2, R.2, "L" Counterstamp, AU53 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/1. Karl Moulton's theory that the Planters Bank provided the "E" and "L" counterstamps on 1815 and 1825 quarters is currently the best regarded. The "L" counterstamp is scarcest. The present gunmetal-gray example is smooth except for a diagonal tick near the front of Liberty's neck. The curls and claws display light wear.
Ex: Steve Ivy, 10/1983; Jules Reiver Collection (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 22408, which realized $3,220; Denis W. Loring Capped Bust Quarter Collection; to the present consignor.
