Description

1825/4 B-2 Quarter, MS61
Enigmatic 'L' Counterstamp

1825/4/(2) 25C "L" Counterstamp, B-2, R.2, MS61 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/1. Struck from an early state of the dies, with considerable prooflikeness in the fields. Attractive toning includes orange-gold centers yielding to forest-green, blue, and deep-amber shades at the margins. The devices display a sharp strike throughout both sides. 1825/4 quarters from the B-2 die pair are sometimes found with an "E" or "L" counterstamp above Liberty's cap -- a curious anomaly seen also on the 1815 B-1 quarters. Where the E counterstamps are more numerous on the 1815 issue, the L is seen more frequently on the 1825/4. Theories abound about the origin of these countermarks, yet no definitive proof exists to identify the issuer. Circumstantial evidence suggests the Harmonist community of Economy, Pennsylvania may have stamped the coins as a voting device, but other proposed explanations are equally possible. The enigma of the counterstamps remains an unsolved numismatic mystery.
