Description

1825/4 B-2 Quarter, MS65
A Coin of Stunning Quality

1825/4/3 25C MS65 PCGS. B-2, R.2. Terminology has differed over the years on the overdated quarters of 1825, which all are. PCGS calls them 1825/4/3, the new Rea-Peterson et al. early quarter book calls them 1825/4/2. The Guide Book calls the two listed varieties 1825/4 and 1825/2.

There are three known die pairings for the year, and all of them use the same obverse die, regardless of terminology. The 5 on the B-2 appears to have remains of a 4 underneath, and it requires imagination to make any further conclusions. The reverse of the B-2 shows the 25C denomination about centered between the eagle and rim, slightly closer to the eagle. This is a stunning Gem example of this available yet popular early issue, an example certified in a PCGS green-label holder that shows full, somewhat prooflike luster on both sides. The surfaces are steel-gray with a generous overlay of sky-blue, pale jade, and russet. A single scrape in the right obverse field, behind Liberty's head, is the only mentionable mark. The Eric P. Newman example we handled was an MS63+ NGC piece. This is the first Gem PCGS B-2 we have handled in more than a decade.
