Description

1828 B-1 Large Size Quarter
A Lovely Toned Gem

1828 25C MS65 NGC. B-1, R.1. The final issue in the Large Size Capped Bust quarter series. On this available die pairing stars 1, 7, 8, and 13 are all closer to the bust than on the B-4 (most noticeably star 1), and there is minute repunching on stars 10 and 11. On the reverse all T's are defective at the bottom right.
The present coin is toned in mottled shades of deep green and gold on the lower two-thirds of the obverse, with the upper portions a light steel-gray. The patina is matched on the reverse where the lower portion is lighter, and the color palette ranges through deep blue, green, and russet, with luster gleaming through the peripheral lettering. The strike is sharp on all but Liberty's uppermost curls, and all stars show full radial lines to the centers. Regardless of variety, the 1828 issue is a very scarce coin in Gem condition, with just a handful seen that qualify at this level and a sole example graded higher by the two major services. A coin for the type collector who demands excellent surfaces and attractive toning. Census: 3 in 65, 1 finer (4/09).
